Dan Melchior

Lifetime Achievement 2026

Over a career spanning 53 years, Dan Melchior—who retired in 2025 as the vice president/general manager at L.L. Johnson Distributing Company, which specializes in turf equipment, irrigation and landscape supply—has been a steadfast supporter of Colorado golf, including the Rocky Mountain Golf Course Superintendents Association.

Due in no small part to Melchior’s efforts, during that time, L.L. Johnson—a distributor of Toro mowers and irrigation systems—saw its share of the Colorado golf market grow from 10 percent in 1976 to 70 percent in 2026.

In addition, with Melchior’s backing, L.L. Johnson has served as the primary sponsor for the superintendent’s annual conference. A graduate of Colorado State University, Melchior has sponsored many RMGCSA members in participating in Toro’s Professionals Club, where superintendents and Toro engineers participate in focus groups after being introduced to new products for their review.

In 2023, Melchior was presented the RMGCSA’s Distinguished Service Award, which acknowledges outstanding—and sustained—contributions by members for the benefit of the association. Two years later, he earned an Honorary Lifetime Member Award from the RMGCSA.

As the association’s publication, The Reporter, noted upon his retirement, “Dan’s empathetic leadership style—always giving credit to others before himself—has earned him deep respect and made him an inspiring leader to follow. His commitment to supporting the RMGCSA has been unwavering; Dan is often the first to ask how he can help, continually offering his time, knowledge and generosity to strengthen the association and its members.”

Under Melchior’s leadership, L.L. Johnson has consistently received customer satisfaction scores of 9 or more—out of 10—from companies in the local golf course community which deal with Toro distributors.

Along with the work he’s done professionally, Melchior has been active with the Colorado Parks & Recreation Association, the Rocky Mountain Regional Turfgrass Association and the Sports Turf Managers Association.
